Due to a myriad of activities and events which precluded the Walk-A-Thon Committee from receiving significant participants and sponsorships, the College, after much consideration, has decided to reschedule the 5^th Annual Morris Brown College Scholarship Walk-A-Thon from Saturday, September 10, 2011 to Saturday, April 14, 2012.

I personally thank members of the Walk-A-Thon Committee for their untiring commitment and dedication to the planning and promotion of this event. To members of the community who supported their efforts, a very special thank you is extended to you also.

I certainly hope that you will “walk” with us on April 14, 2012 as we continue our journey to higher heights.

Atlanta, GA (August 22, 2011).  The United States Department of Education (DOE) has received a bank transfer from Morris Brown College in the amount of $500,000, according to the terms of a settlement agreement between Morris Brown and the DOE, to resolve the $9,944,000 debt owed by Morris Brown to the Department of Education.

"This is certainly a major achievement for us - the most significant milestone reached by the college - since we started this recovery process with an aggressive turn-around plan in 2010.  Our objective is to restore the legacy of Morris Brown College and to move the college into the 21st Century with a global approach to educational programs," said Dr. Stanley Pritchett, President of Morris Brown.  "This is a day of thanksgiving to the thousands of alumni and friends of  the college including many faith-based organizations who reached deep into their pockets for the benefit of this institution and the young people who want to attend Morris Brown,"  Pritchett added.

The settlement agreement called for Morris Brown College to submit payment of $500,000 to the DOE within ninety days from the date that the Department of Justice (DOJ) gave its approval. The 90-day clock started on May 26th.  Morris Brown had until August 24, 2011 to pay the settlement.

An aggressive turn-around plan was launched through a "Special Committee," under the leadership of Trustee William "Sonny" Walker, of the Morris Brown College Board of Trustees. A Fundraising Committee, an outgrowth of the Special Committee, was headed by Trustee Robert Barnett and Trustee Victoria Jenkins, who worked untiringly to create strategic alliances and raise the necessary funds. 

Jerry Howard, a 1970 graduate of Morris Brown now living in Texas, made a donation of $50,000 to the college during the observance of Morris Brown's 130th Founders Day.  This gift was  the catalyst that seemed to galvanize alumni and friends - the result of which has been an out-pouring on financial support from other segments of the Atlanta community.  The Steve Harvey Show devoted a morning drive-time segment to make an appeal for Morris Brown.

"Support coming from many faith-based organizations and denominations has been the backbone of our fundraising efforts and we owe so many people - too many to enumerate - our gratitude," says Trustee Jenkins and Barnett. 

Morris Brown College has applied for accreditation from Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) -- a national accrediting agency certified by the Department of Education (DOE) that focuses on colleges that have Christian principles in its mission.

In addition to The Home Depot "Retool Your School"  campus improvement grant of $10,000, Morris Brown is looking forward to more corporate and community involvement.  "Morris Brown has a crucial role to play in the future of Atlanta's education community.  We have a viable plan for the future and we will continue to turn to the greater Atlanta community for support and reinforcement," said Dr. William DeVeaux, Chairman of the Morris Brown Board of Trustees and Bishop of the 6th District of the AME Church (Georgia).

We sincerely hope that this email finds you and yours well.  Speaking of well, the US Congress, US Senate and President appears to have agreed on a deal regarding the debt ceiling situation last night (Sunday July 31st, 2011).

Let's all hope and pray that this agreement cut cost, reduce any chance for new taxes and in the long run, save our overall economy.

The Economic Impact of Renewable Energy

The 5th Annual Morris Brown College Scholarship Walk-A-Thon presents (Retired Lt. General) David Poythress

Who is Retired Lt. Gen. David Poythress?

David Poythress is a native Georgian. He grew up in Macon and played football at Lanier High for Boys.


He attended Emory at Oxford, and earned both his B.A. degree and his commission as an Air Force officer at “big Emory” in Atlanta. He is a distinguished military graduate of the Emory ROTC program, and he graduated with honors from Emory University School of Law. David served four years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a judge advocate officer. He volunteered for duty in Viet Nam, and served as defense counsel and Chief of Military Justice at DaNang Air Base, in the Republic of Viet Nam.


David’s civilian career has included public service, military service, and private law practice.


Upon returning to civilian life, David held several positions in Georgia State Government, including Assistant Attorney General, Deputy State Revenue Commissioner, and Secretary of State. During the decade of the 80’s, David practiced law in Atlanta, with concentrations in taxation and public finance. In 1992 he was elected statewide to the Office of State Labor Commissioner, and he was re-elected in 1994.


David resigned as State Labor Commissioner in 1998 and ran for Governor of Georgia.


After leaving active duty, David remained in the Air Force Reserve as a Judge Advocate, and attained the rank of Brigadier General. In 1999, he was appointed Adjutant General – the commander of the Georgia Army and Air National Guard – in the rank of Major General. In 2002 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General – the first Adjutant General in Georgia history to wear three stars.


General Poythress has held leadership positions in several national and local organizations. He served as Vice Chairman of the Board of the National Guard Association of the United States, and is a member of the Board of Directors of Jobs for America’s Graduates. He has served two terms as Chairman of the Board of the State YMCA of Georgia, and he previously served on the boards of Wesley Homes and the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women. He is a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the USO.

General Poythress currently serves as Executive Vice-President for JBAR Enterprises, LLC.  JBAR is a Veteran-owned business that place its focus and effort in the delivery of services, as well as, "green" products.  Its mission is to improve environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

An Evening Lecture from the Honorary Consul General of The Republic of Albania Atlanta Region

The 5th Annual Morris Brown College Scholarship Walk-A-Thon presents Ambassador Theodore R. Britton, Jr.


Who is Dr. Theodore R. Britton, Jr. ?

Ambassador Theodore R. (Ted) Britton, Jr. served as Chief of Mission to Barbados and to the State of Grenada, from 1974 to 1977 with the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. In addition, he served concurrently as the US Special Representative to the States of Antigua, Dominica, St. Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent.

He retired from the Department of Housing and Urban Development after a distinguished career as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (GS-17), Assistant to the Secretary for International Affairs, Deputy Regional Administrator (ES-4), Manager, Newark Office, in the New York Region. In 1989, he received the Department’s Distinguished Service Award. On his retirement, he was honored with resolutions from the City Councils of Newark, NJ and Washington, DC. Banking is his profession, having served as an officer and director in the savings and commercial banking business.

Ambassador Britton has maintained a life-long interest in diplomatic affairs and international activities as shown by his extensive participation in US Information Agency programs beginning in 1971. During 1981 to 1989, he served as American Chair of the US-China Agreement on Housing and Planning, and as Executive Secretary to similar agreements with Mexico, Canada, and the former Soviet Union (USSR). A long-time vice chair, he was elected Chairman/President of the Group on Urban Affairs (in 1985) at the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). During this period, he lead a two year OECD Mission to Study and Evaluate Japan’s Urban Policies, and later, presided at the second meeting of Urban Affairs Ministers of the 24 OECD nations.

A specialist in finance and housing, he was president of The American Baptist Management Corporation prior to entering Government service. In his first position, his expertise was utilized to help improve the production of housing and the delivery of housing services. He was elected president of New York’s United Mutual Life Insurance Company after leaving his diplomatic post in Barbados. He returned to Government in 1981 to manage the various bi-lateral programs involving housing and urban development.

He is a graduate of New York University with a B.S. in Banking and Finance, and from the American Savings and Loan Institute, with the Standard and Graduate Diplomas. In 2009, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) by Kristal University, in Tirana, Albania.

Mr. Britton has twice served in the US Marine Corps. He is a Life Member of the Montford Point Marines, the Second Marine Division, and the Association for Intelligence Officers. He is currently a director of the Council of American Ambassadors, Georgia Council for International Visitors, and is Honorary Chairman of Kristal University. Lastly, he is an “Ambassador for Peace” of the Universal Peace Federation, having served on many Missions including the Middle East Peace Initiative to Israel and Palestine during 2007.

A long-time supporter of education, he has lectured at colleges and universities throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, the USA, Central America and the Caribbean. He recently completed a two year lecture series on “The Caribbean” at Georgia’s world famed Emory University. In 2008, after being recognized honored by South Korea’s National Assembly, he was designated to respond on behalf of the assembled Korean War Veterans.

Who is Michael McFadden ?

Michael A. McFadden, affectionately known as "Face" to his peers, brings an impressive and extensive track-record of Director-level corporate leadership experience and success to all he’s involved in.

Don't let the "baby face" fool you... Michael has done it all, serving in the US Army (Infantry soldier) during Operation Desert Storm, Realtor and Regional Sales Trainer for one of the largest home builders in the nation, as well as 12 other jobs he has held along the way.

Being a native of Southeast Washington, DC, Michael intimately understands, employs, and relies on the sheer "determination-factor" associated with achieving major success. He learned the meaning of hustling in Southview (Oxon Hill, Maryland)... and cleaned up well in Atlanta, Georgia.

Moreover, as a seasoned national speaker, talk show host (Real Talk with Michael A. McFaddden) and published author (TRUISMS), Michael enjoys speaking to business and corporate sectors, but especially relishes the opportunity to speak with kids who need inspiration, a positive role model, and help with self-esteem and character building.

Government Contracting: Scouting The Game

Who is Dannie James, Sr. ?

Mr. Dannie James serves as President of Government Business CoachSultant, LLC. (GBC). He is a graduate of Livingstone College with a Bachelor Degree in Education and Masters Degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University. He’s a proud graduate of the Officer Candidate School, Fort Benning, Georgia. Mr. James holds the highest level of government contracting certification as a DAWIA Level III certified Contracting Officer from the Defense Acquisition University (specializing in Acquisition and Procurement). He has held executive leadership management positions such as Lead Contingency Contracting Officer and Directorate of Contracting. With his 22 years in the military, he served as a Senior NCO and Senior Staff Officer. In June of 2000, he was selected to serve as the Director of Contracting for 3rd Army Central Command (Forward) located in Saudi Arabia. With his leadership, he supported approximately 1100 personnel in support of a $48.7 million budget. The Coach" In June of 2002, Dannie transferred to Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) in Huntsville, Alabama where he managed the Quality Assurance Program of an Acquisition Category 1 program. He supervised the complete oversight of the production of the Interim Armor Vehicle (Stryker), a contract that was valued over $6 billion dollars. Dannie ensured proper auditing, sampling, inspecting, and process proofing of the production process and testing/accepting the Interim Armor Vehicle (Stryker).

After retiring from the military in 2004, Dannie established JE Consulting Group LLC, a company that specializes in government contract consulting services. With JE Consulting Group’s success, Dannie founded Government Business CoachSultants, LLC. (GBC originally founded in 2008). GBC focuses on the full life cycle of understanding how to proactively position and market businesses successfully in the Federal Government market (using Dannie’s proprietary "10 Step Methodology"). HOW TO RAISE $350 IN ONE WEEK AND BECOME A BRONZE LEVEL SPONSOR AS A TEAM

1. Begin by putting in your own contribution of $35 USD to become a VIP Sponsor and give your Team a name.

2. Then, download the the 'Annual Morris Brown College Walk-A-Thon / Run PDF from the Internet via www.mbcscholarwalk.org . Note: Look for 'Team Registration Form' in the top left corner.

Note: For tax related purposes make sure all checks are payable to 'Morris Brown College'. Make a note on the check stating, 'MBC Scholarship Walk-A-THON with name of your team somewhere beside it.

Furthermore, you can now pay your registration Online. Please make sure you and your Team Member write the name of your team in a writable area before paying.

If you have any trouble identifying your payment with a particular team, please call (404) 739-1123 to notify us.

3. Now ask two members of your family to become VIP Sponsors; each paying $35 USD a piece. If they hesitate to make a decision, read the incentives that goes alone with this fund-raising opportunity.

4. Then, ask your employer to contribute $35 USD and mention to the employer that a Bronze Level Sponsorship is only $350 USD. Please make sure you mention the incentives.
